Upset People
I can't study anymore and fear that I have broken my cerebrum. Today was our last ethics class for this semester. This class always puts me in an "off" mood. [Note: this post my upset/outrage some readers, but it's my opinion and you can go to hell] The professor pretty much summed up the previous sessions and I realized that the shear amount of human population growth is killing the planet. As a result of the misuse and over-use of global resources, society is screwing itself over. Society is unable to right the wrongs of ignorance over the past century due to the majority of the population's reliance on recently determined mistakes. Take for example the lack of fish in the ocean. When the first settlers came to this country, the waters were described as teaming and churning with the activity of marine animals and fish. And now, the ocean is comparatively bare due to constant pillaging by fisherman. So what should society do to fix this? Stop fishing by imposing even stricter laws? No, because this leaves thousands of fisherman without jobs and thousands of people without a food source from seafood. Start fish farms? No, because the practices of fish farms are pretty cruel, unethical, and uneconomical. The same frustrating scenario is repeated again and again, from oil use to chopping down rain forests. You can protest against what you feel strongly about from week to week, but because of the shear amount of people, thus society, that depends on these resources, you can't even make a dent.
So, solution? Not one that many want to think about. The worldwide population has grown out of hand. There needs to be less people gobbling up the resources, renewable and non alike. Outside of a "final solution," there is not much government can do about imposing policy to limit the number of people, other than the radical limiting of the number of children people can have, which would never fly in America. So, mother nature (or what-have-you, that supernatural power that controls us all) has done what she can through natural disasters (ice ages, meteorological upsets, diseases, etc. This is where the medical community actually hurts society but trying to find cures. Viruses are the "best" way to cut down the population. Society's fixation on finding treatments and cures to heal and prolong life is just making things worse. HIV is THE most potent weapon mother nature has against the population growth. The fact that HIV has become pandemic yet is so easily preventable (outside of sharps sticks, contaminated blood transfusions, and transmission from mother to child during natural child birth) goes to show how susceptibility of the human population. HIV infects so quietly, so ingenious and the route of transmission also weeds out many of the dregs of society. It's too bad death doesn't come sooner however. And it's also too bad that the medical community is trying to cure it [sorry Eliz]. Just imagine the next pandemic virus to come along, a mutation of the Avian flu, smallpox outbreak, Ebola. Or even the threat of antibiotic resistance, which will surely wipe out the majority of the world population. Besides mother nature, maybe a purely human-engineered super virus could decimate the population. Of course, it won't be until then that the mistakes society has made can be righted by nature.
Of course, this is all theory. And becoming a doctor (and eating fish) I admit that I'm a total hypocrite. If you've gotten this far in my rant and are unhappy with me, I'm NOT sorry :P
