Livestock fun
Ah, yes, today was clin skills day, where we learn how to handle livestock, cows, pigs, sheep, etc. Things I did today: rubbed a cows vulva (30s) to make her urinate, played with baby sheep, pissed off some pigs as usual, looked at slides and video of horses (whoo-hoo, slideshow!), and learned how to put IV catheters in. It was pretty cold, but I managed to stick myself between two cows to keep warm. And the pig facility is always warm and humid, with a nice earthy smell. Nothing too exciting today, kinda disappointed. We don't play with the livestock again until March.
In anatomy lab Wednesday, the group next to us pulled their guts out and found something unexpected. After cutting the horses in half transversely (we all did), they opened up this grey sac in the top of the abdomen (uterus) and found a fetus. It was amazing. It looked like a little miniature foal, like the size of a cat, little hooves and ears and face. It was kind of sad too. It reminded me of the time we opened the dogs stomach and found her last meal, sausages. It reminds me that the horses and goats were once alive, running around having a good time, and had an owner who (hopefully) cared for them. Sort of brings you down to earth.
I'm looking forward to getting snowed in this weekend. I'd like to see at least 6 inches of snow on the ground. I'd also like to sleep for more than 4 hours in a row. Oh yea, and catch up on some work I've been procrastinating on this week. And spend time with my boyfriend I suppose too
